A vocal bed is a wordless background track built entirely from layered human voice — sustained harmonies, low humming, breath and resonance — mixed to sit underneath speech. It does exactly what instrumental underscore does in conventional video (fills silence, adds warmth, carries mood) while staying instrument-free. Vocal beds are the backbone of the Aswati catalog and of halal video editing generally.
How a bed is built
One voice becomes many: a low sustained root, octaves and fifths stacked above it, a floating counter-line, all sung, all blended until no single voice is distinguishable. The result reads to the ear as texture rather than song — closer to a string pad than a choir, yet every frequency in it came from breath. That exposure is the craft: with no instruments to hide behind, tuning and blend have to be exact, which is why beds are recorded in layered studio passes rather than one take.
Mixing one under your voice
Three numbers to remember: −20 dB nominal level under narration, 2–3 dB of extra dip during dense speech (use ducking or manual automation), and one-second fades at every entrance and exit. Choose a bed whose register sits away from your voice — a low male voiceover pairs with a higher, airier bed and vice versa — so the two never fight for the same frequencies.
